The Guide to Proper Dental Implant Aftercare – Tampa, FL

Dental implants are screw-like devices that are surgically placed on the jawbone to serve as the replacement for lost tooth roots. Depending on the number of missing teeth, a crown, bridge, or denture will be anchored to the implant posts. Instead of just replacing the visible portion of the teeth as other restorations do, implants also mimic the support underneath. With it, patients are not only assured of having their smile aesthetics restored but the functionality of their teeth as well since it offers better stability and durability.

Have you scheduled a dental implant restoration procedure? Here are some easy aftercare tips we at Westchase Smiles Institute have prepared to make patients’ recovery quick and successful!

Caring for Dental Implants

Swelling

It is expected for patients to experience swelling after the placement of implants. To counter this occurrence, it is best to place an ice pack against the area closest to the treatment site. It should be done for two days for 10 minutes in and 20 minutes out to avoid damaging the tissues. Apart from swelling, bruising may also take place, but it is also expected. In a few days, pain and discomfort will be eased.

Manage pain

As soon as the anesthetics or sedative starts wearing off, it is best to take pain medications. Purchase over the counter medications or ask the dentist for prescriptions to counter a more severe type of pain.

Oral hygiene

  • Rinse the mouth with salt and warm water solution after every meal for at least four to five times a day. It is best to observe this practice for a week following the procedure.
  • Do not attempt to floss anywhere near the treatment area for a week.
  • Instead of using electric or battery-operated devices, switching to a manual toothbrush is best
  • Keep foods away from the treated area.
  • Stop smoking and drinking alcohol for it can delay the healing process.
  • Brushing can be performed as long as the surgical area is avoided.

Bleeding

Following the placement of implants, patients need not worry about the presence of blood in the first 24 hours. Control bleeding by biting down on a piece of gauze for 30 minutes. If bleeding persists, it is best to address the problem to a professional.

Consumption

  • Make sure to drink a sufficient amount of liquids
  • Eat soft foods in the meantime
  • If anesthetics are still in effect, avoid hot and cold substances
  • Do not drench the site with excessive amounts of water
  • Follow further instructions provided by the dentist

Schedule follow up visits

Aside from the tips provided above, it is still best to seek the assistance of a dental professional. Doing so lets them observe the state of the patient’s recovery and any factors that may threaten the success of dental implants.

My father was in town for my sister's wedding and had one of his front fillings come out two days before the wedding. Dr. Cesar Chilmaza was able to get him last minute and did an amazing job. My father said that he did a better job fixing it than the original filling! Not only did he do a great job, he and his staff we so friendly and knowledgeable and did everything in their power to help take care of him. Thanks to Dr. Cesar my sister's wedding photos won't be a disaster!

Cesar is amazingly kind and patient with my endless questions. I'm ridiculously terrified of the dentist and they somehow understand my fears while gently coaxing me to follow the treatment plan they recommend. They're also open evenings for those of us still working. Simply put, they're quite delightful!
