A root canal procedure, or endodontics, is performed when the soft tissue inside the root canal of a tooth, known as the pulp, becomes infected. This type of infection usually occurs when there are cracks or chips, repeated dental procedures, deep decay, or by an injury. If left untreated, this condition can become very painful and may even lead to an abscess and tooth loss. The most common symptoms of a root canal infection include:
- Severe tooth pain
- Temperature sensitivities
- Swollen lymph nodes
- Abscesses on the gums
A root canal procedure begins with a local anesthetic to numb the area. This will numb the tooth and keep you pain-free. Other sedation options are also available for your comfort. Next, our dental professionals will access the inside of the tooth through an incision from the top. They will then use specialized dental tools to clean the pulp from the chamber. The root canal will then be shaped and filled with a biocompatible material called gutta-percha. A temporary crown will be placed over the tooth, where it will protect the tooth until a permanent crown is placed during the following appointment.
