Cancer, in the simplest possible terms, refers to the uncontrollable growth of cells in the body. Some patients have a greater chance of developing oral cancer than others. This can be due to certain lifestyle choices, such as smoking, excessive drinking and certain diets. We provide an oral cancer screening for all patients, regardless of their chances of developing the condition. However, patients who are at the highest risk may be asked to make lifestyle changes to help reduce their risk.
During an oral cancer screening, the dentist will feel the soft oral tissues for any signs of cancerous growth. The areas that we check include the lips, tongue, face, gums and throat. We will carefully look out for any lumps or sores that could suggest the presence of cancer.
